AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition

Posted by Dan on 07:29 with No comments
AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition lets you manage your hard drives with ease, regardless of your prior experience and, if you know your way around, advanced features like file system converters are at your fingertips. Alternatively, you can choose to be walked through several common operations with the help of step-by-step wizards.

Pros

Eight wizards: Despite its advanced nature, AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition comes with eight step-by-step wizards that will walk you through a few common disk operations. Some of the options include making a copy of your disk, extending a partition, creating a Windows To Go disk, and a partition recovery wizard.
Disk copy: The app offers the ultimate backup method -- cloning one drive, so it has the exact same data as another one, down to the very last bit. There is even an option to copy the information in the sectors where there is no visible data -- a great way to save files from a dying or corrupted hard drive.
Windows To Go creator: We were very impressed with the fact that you can create Windows To Go installations with the app; Windows To Go essentially allows you to boot Windows installed on a thumb drive from any PC. Note that at least a 16GB thumb drive is required for this operation.

Cons

Cannot queue operations: Each operation needs to be completed before you can begin the next one. The rule applies even if the two operations are carried out on two separate disks.
Buggy MBR to GPT converter: When we tested the MBR to GPT converter on a thumb drive with no partitions, we discovered a bug where the app won't recognize the converted thumb drive, even though the Windows Disk Manager and later My Computer do. We were able to fix the issue by repartitioning the thumb drive using Disk Utility on Mac OS X.

Bottom Line

Have you just bought a new hard drive for your PC and are looking for the most painless way to migrate your Windows installation and all of your personal data? AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition is well-suited to handle your case as well as numerous others.

SlimDrivers Free

Posted by Dan on 07:28 with No comments
SlimDrivers scans for available updates for all of your drivers, and then manages the download and installation process for you. Rather than having to figure out which programs might be out of date and then checking for updates individually, you can use this program to significantly streamline the process and keep all programs running smoothly.

Pros

Quick scans: When you first open the app, you can quickly complete a scan with just the click of a button. The scan encompasses all drivers on your machine that could be out of date and identifies locations for available update downloads.
Intuitive interface: The controls for this program are straightforward, with a large button for initiating a scan. Once the scan is complete, you'll see a list of the programs with updates available, and you can opt to download that update straight through the app, or you can choose to ignore updates for certain programs. When you begin each download, you can also instruct the app to create a restore point, so that if anything goes wrong, you can recover your software intact up to that point.

Cons

Slow downloads: The downloads we attempted through this app took a very long time to complete, sometimes between five and ten minutes. There were also several instances in which they failed completely.
Self-promotion: This app features a lot of banner as well as pop-up ads promoting other programs by this developer or for their paid products, which offer automatic updates. The free program only makes it possible for you to download updates, manually.

Bottom Line

SlimDrivers is a good free option if you want a quick way to check for driver updates for various programs on your computer. It may be best to avoid downloading thorough the app, as that can be a bit of an arduous process, but getting the search results is a quick and straightforward process. Especially if you don't have a lot of drivers, it's worth checking out this app. It's possible that the paid programs this developer offers complete downloads more quickly, but unfortunately you'll have to pay to find out.

Glary Utilities

Glary Utilities is a comprehensive system cleaner and performance booster for your PC that includes an excellent suite of tools. You can take advantage of 1-Click Maintenance, or pick and choose the operations you'd like the app to perform, all through its streamlined and intuitive interface.

Pros

Customizable maintenance: Even the 1-Click Maintenance option lets you choose what you'd like to include in your scan. Choose from options that include Registry Cleaner, Shortcuts Fixer, Spyware Remover, and Startup Manager, and then complete all of the selected items with a single click on all future uses. You can also adjust these selections at any time.
Windows boot time: Another nice feature of this app is the Windows Boot Time monitor that displays right in the middle of the main interface window. Here, you'll see the total time Windows currently takes to boot on your computer, along with stats telling you where that time ranks among all Windows users. If you're looking to improve your boot time, you can access and manage a list of the programs that load on Windows startup, and you can select programs for delayed start to help improve performance.

Cons

Not so speedy: Some operations and scans this program completed during testing took a little longer than they did in other similar programs we've tested. But none of the completion times were excessively long in the slightest.

Bottom Line

Glary Utilities offers a lot of functionality through an accessible interface, even in the free version. If you'd like to unlock some of the more powerful features, like Deep Clean and Fix and Automatic Maintenance, you'll have to upgrade to the Pro version for $39.95. This purchase price covers a one-year subscription for up to three PCs

Smart Defrag

IObit Smart Defrag 4 optimizes your PC to take full advantage of SSD performance while defragmenting your hard disks. Its SSD Trim tool automatically enables system tweaks that typically require experience to apply. Smart Defrag 4's updates include a new defrag engine, specialized Game Defrag, a cool new look, and many more language options (35 and counting).

Pros

Smarter: A new and smarter defrag engine recovers more free space on traditional hard disks but skips solid-state drives (SSDs), which should never be defragmented. The Smart Optimize tool analyzes your system and combines Defrag, Optimize, and Prioritize processes based on speed.
SSD Trim: Smart Defrag 4's Trim tool applies the important TRIM command that helps keep your SSD clean and fast. The Trim tool even has its own disk map.
Accessible disk map: Smart Defrag 4's Settings thoughtfully include an accessible disk map optimized for color-challenged viewers.
Boot Time Defrag: Smart Defrag 4 can quickly defrag drives at boot, and you can easily skip the process and get right to work if you need to. No worries; Boot Time Defrag won't defrag your SSD boot drive.

Cons

SSD DIY: Real power users may still prefer their own SSD tweaks to Smart Defrag 4's Trim tool.

Bottom Line

IObit Smart Defrag 4 is the best defragger we've tried yet.
